Lighthouse's Young Writers Program expanded to include an outreach program in 2008. One of our first experiences was a week-long collaboration with the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts (or MESA, for those of us who embrace easier acronyms).
Around a month after we completed our week-long programming -- bringing the students to Lighthouse, visiting them in their classroom, and all hanging out in the Tattered Cover Bookstore -- we received a thank-you card in the form of a Book of Thanks. Below is an excerpt:
You've Made Me a Better Writer

The first day I traveled to Lighthouse
I was clueless about writing poetry,
now that's what I write in.
I didn't know how to set writing in poetry,
now it seems so easy.
rattling down my wet street
I wasn't a big fantasy writer
now my imagination is always on paper
Threw a rattle at the rubber door.
"BONG!" The rattle flew in the bathroom.
As I walked into Lighthouse
I was clueless.
Since I walked out of Lighthouse,
all I do is write.
Thank you for helping me on my writing skills.
I feel like I'm a much better writer now.
